Public sector productivity
Public sector productivity will be the buzzword for 2010 according to the IOD's "Big Picture".
The cry everywhere is "we need to do more for less".
Certainly there will be less resource available. Twenty two estimates of public sector productivity have been made in the last six years and 18 of them show falls. The most recent shows a drop of 3.4% between 1997 and 2007.
If the private sector growth had been matched the public purse would have been better off by £58bn!. Unit costs of public service output grew by 13.7% as compared for 1.3% for the whole economy.
